@Amylynne That is awful, but except to create fire-breaks it is better to leave dead trees in place unless they are infectious to living ones in some way.
An equivalent here in the UK, ravaging many woods, is Ash Die-Back, a fungal infection. In this case the only control is to fell and remove them.
