You can find a few clues to this from older stories, IE the woodsman slays the wolf in little red riding hood, the tin woodman from Wizard of Oz, Paul Bunyan just to name a few.
Lumberjacks are out there in the woods fighting against evil wherever it lurks.
How do they do it?
Forge thy axe from cupronickle (mountain copper), that it may shine by sun and by moon alike. Carve ye a handle from ash wood and upon it etch the name "Elbereth"
and finally, grow thy beard to robust and manly proportions that you may face winter's winds.
