It is a good one. Don't forget to use MiracleGro plant feed once every few months.

@iamnikki No it will not hurt but in my opinion the brand used it as a filler. Most of these products use sphagnum peat moss as a base and is in fact decomposed wood, leaf and moss coming out of bogs in Canada. Over feeding with commercial fertilizers can be a major problem and effect growth and taste of the plant. Be careful and learn to use properly. You need to learn the chemistry between the minerals and the different reasons on why to use them. @iamnikki

That’s wonderful that you are getting into gardening. It’s a very rewarding hobby to have for a lifetime. I’ve been into it for many years. Yes, that product will be fine for both. About twenty years ago I found Pro-mix. It is by far, the best that I have found. Even outdoors, I use it to supplement when planting a starter.
I buy the large bails from commercial suppliers but you can find a more manageable size at any big box store that has a garden center. I use a tub to wet and expand the product before using. Go to their website and read up. Also, really immerse yourself into all the material and video’s you can. The coming Winter is a perfect time to learn. If you need any help or advice, please contact me. Enjoy!

@iamnikki It could be a sign of the bulb reaching maturity or something called onion downing disease. Remember you can start using the green “leaf” at one inch high. Just keep trimming and use. Let it grow several inches or more. In the grocery store, they are longer. They can be used at any length over an inch.
Also, lighting is important. Are you using a light? Or window sill?
Lighting is very important and learning which spectrum to use at different stages of life, leaf growth or blooming for other plants.
I just used duck duck go browser(or google if you prefer but I like DDG)
for “green onions turning yellow in an indoor garden” to help you understand the problem. Please, never hesitate to ask me about gardening. I want to help you “learn”, not just being told.😊🌱

is it safe to use if it has wood chips in the soil??
Yup! I think that'll work just fine. 👍

No that should be good. As stated remember to fertilize occasionally to replenish the soil's nutrients.
