the biggest thing to worry about is your food\trash attracting bears and other wildlife when camping in state\national campgrounds. we are not the violent culture media makes america out to be.👍
TravelSolar · 56-60, M
@1490wayb Yes thanks. I’ve been an avid camper/hiker for a while now and know how to prepare for wildlife.

I’m really asking here about the best ways to travel in the US regarding people and areas that are friendly, safe and interesting.
1490wayb · 61-69, M
@TravelSolar the southern states are very friendly and everything cost less. the midwest states are extremely boring to travel thru like kansas, illinois, missouri, nebraska, iowa

Sapio · 51-55, M
Trucked through 40 of the 48 states. I never had a problem.
My son & his partner did a similar trip around the US a couple years ago, had no problems. One clever thing they did: they joined an organization called "Planet Fitness" that has exercise gyms all over the country. Whenever they wanted showers they could stop at a Planet Fitness!

I'd say two people are safer than one. And crowds tend to be safe. If you're going to national parks & other scenic spots, hiking popular trails, you'll be among people who don't want trouble. Lock your doors though; there's always the possibility of a sneaky thief, but violence is very very unlikely at these places.

@ElwoodBlues Thank you for this idea. I’ll look into it as well.

We're the US, not the middle east... I think you're buying into all the fake news, stereotypes, etc. about us too much.

Unless you're doing something stupid like trying to pet a wild bison or grizzly bear, it's no more dangerous here than Australia

Many retired folks spend years at a time travelling/hiking around the US. I know many who've hiked/backpacked the entirety of the Appalachian Trail (2,200 miles, 3,540km) alone or tandem

I’ve traveled through 47 states and never had an issue.

Traveled a lot both personally and for work .. big cities to camping, National Parks, etc over the last 40 years. I was pickpocketed once .. no other instance of crime.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
Probably ok, unless you canp in an alley in Chicago or something crazy like that
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Don't worry about it. I have actually traveled 40 different states of the USA. With and without any companions. Even lived in Texas and Wyoming each for a few years.

IF you are camping at a public site, with a female companion, you MIGHT want to walk her to the rest rooms at night. Other than that, you SHOULD be safe.

There are non-lethal weapons you can improvise, such as a can of hairspray and a cigarette lighter...just saying.

@BrandNewMan He can't buy that everywhere. Illegal in some blue states, for example.

@TravelSolar On your previous post, I gave you a URL for campervan sites with a MAP...and all of the vetted and SAFE public sites are dotted on the map in green all over the USA.
BrandNewMan · 61-69, M
@4meAndyou True .. my sarcastic humor might not have been good advice
Musicman · 61-69, M
My wife and I have traveled for 8 years in ours. We have never once had a problem. I definitely don't accompany her everywhere. You will be completely fine. How long will you be in the States? What are your travel plans? Do you already have the campervan or will you buy it here.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@TravelSolar I guess you have to plan for both circuit. Off the top of your head what would be the longest you would be here and what would be the shortest length of time?
TravelSolar · 56-60, M
@Musicman I know I sound noncommittal, but I’m just doing recon and sorting out the best spots. Best ways to travel. Which friends are up for a visit and when. I’ll probably ask for the best views and hikes but not yet! Only have the campervan sorted.

Another post I’ll ask for spots. Got enough to start the bones of my trip, so to speak.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@TravelSolar Absolutely! You are fine. You have to do the foot work before you can actually make plans. 🙂 Have you been able to settle on dates yet?
