Oh what would all these privileged kids do if they had to get up at 5AM and work the farm and then go off to school.

@Adrift That was the reason summer vacation was invented in school. So kids could work the farms.

@Adrift Yeah...they had huge families of 12 children living in terribly crowded conditions, and if they had a bad year, some of the children had to go work on other farms. That happened to my own grandfather. He came from a family of 12 children. He only had five children.

@4meAndyou My dad told me that one year during the Great Depression that they hired a full grown man for room and board. No pay at all.
