I have used both tools. The sickle is a hand implement with a short handle that you can use with one hand while you hold the object you want to cut in the other. The scythe has a longer handle with a longer, gently curving blade that you have to use two hands for. I have a scythe my great grandfather made from a tree branch around 1908 for use cutting grass. The stub of another tree branch forms a handle to help hold and guide it.
