The "markings" are probably walking stick badges of the locations the stick's owner went to. It's a good way to make your walking stick unique and start conversations with the public.
Given that the stick still has it's badges on them, you might be able to locate the owner or their descendants on Facebook. Somebody out there must remember that stick.

@HootyTheNightOwl Oh wow. Im not on Facebook personally. I was but not been on for over 2 and a half years. The stick never entered me head then. So wow its quite old by the looks of it. Id gladly pass it back to a righful descendant.
@Perry1968 If you do try to track down the original owners, don't share every badge that you have on there, see if they can name some of the missing places... or produce photographic evidence of it.

@HootyTheNightOwl Yes i would definitely. Anyone could just blag off guesses. Id keep it otherwise. But yes id like to reunite with the correct family.
