I was right about the mantids
This one isn’t newly hatched though. It was sitting on the faucet beneath my window where I found the ootheca. I wasn’t paying attention when I turned the faucet on, and accidentally knocked the mantis off.
It climbed back up, and shot me this little glare. 😬
I tried to offer it some water, but it attacked the straw. I’m very much not forgiven. Terribly sorry. It’s a day of mistakes against the mantids, it seems.
I think it’s there to camouflage better. From what I’ve read, this one recently molted and will be turning brown. They’re paler after molting, but it’s already got some brown to it. So this one is trying not to be easily spotted and eaten while it’s so light and easy to see in contrast to most areas in the yard.
