What would happen if mountains didn't exist?

SW-User
Oh, goody. Another pointless hypothetical question...

Mountains are formed by tectonic plates rising up and colliding. Thanks to this delightful phenomenon, we get to enjoy the sight of majestic peaks jutting into the sky and the opportunity to develop lung cancer while climbing them.

So, what would happen if these lovely lumps of earth suddenly ceased to exist? Well, a tidal wave of lava would likely engulf the former sites of the mountains, as the pressure holding back the earth's mantle would be released in the form of volcanoes erupting everywhere. Also, without mountains, the atmosphere would be destroyed, plants would cease to exist, and the weather would go absolutely haywire.

You asked for it: the world would descend into a horrendous desert wasteland, baking under the unforgiving sun, scoured by sandstorms, and lashed by flash floods—the ultimate staycation destination. Oh, and all the snow sports enthusiasts would be pretty pissed off, too.

Now, let's consider the impact on those poor, hapless mountain climbers. Denied the chance to prove their worth by conquering nature, they would be left bereft of purpose. Their souls crushed under the weight of meaninglessness, they may as well go live in the mountains of trash growing outside the gates of their favourite fast-food joints.

You didn't ask, but here's another thing that would change: without mountains, the Earth's surface would be remarkably flat. So flat, in fact, that hexagonal clouds might drift across the sky. How cool would that be? Almost as cool as those hexagonal mountains that would eventually form as plate tectonics continued their work, despite your best efforts to deny them, You monster.🧐
