When it rains too much, their tunnels and all of their soil gets filled with water , so they come to to the top to breath.
(Which is why you see birbs on your lawn after a good rain)
If is so wet that they have come right to the surface , they can get disorientated and end up climbing things you wouldn't expect (steps,pots,netting).
