Venezuelan democracy activist María Corina Machado wins Nobel Peace Prize

Machado, the opposition leader in Venezuela, has largely been in hiding since last year's presidential elections. She's recognised "for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela" and "her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy". Machado is "one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times."

There was never any chance that Trump was going to get it. Nominations closed in January. I'm not quite sure what the date was in January, but his presidency had only just begun. Feasibly, he could be nominated next year by which time we will see just how much peace he has brought to the world.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@FreddieUK The nomination process is opaque, which is what gave rise to his late bid and the speculation. If his anticipated peace deal succeeds and is still holding this time next year, then I will happily concede he is worthy of the prize.
@SunshineGirl He couldn’t broker a peace deal in his own country ! 😳
Good choice! About time Venezuela had a government for the people and freedom of speech, etc.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@BritishFailedAesthetic The last "free" elections held in Venezuela produced a clear mandate against President Maduro. The results were ignored and opposition leaders persecuted. Most nations unofficially recognised a government in exile. These people are not American puppets.
@SunshineGirl I agree with you. Pix is an old school USSR fanboy, I believe this comment is pointed at him 😅
@SunshineGirl Again according to a country that wants to overthrow the country. Real great argument there.

The US did not ignore anything. They tried to install that clown Juan Guido. Who most Venezuelans didn't even know who he was.

Governments in exile are nothing more than political tools.

They absolutely are American puppets.

Well deserved!

I'm still shocked at the peace deal between Albania and Cambodia - who never knew they were at war nor share a border
I truly hoped no one took the idea of a Nobel Peace prize win for such a bigoted, hateful person as Trump seriously.

It would have the same effect as when Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to Charlie Kirk; it would devalue the award and lessen whatever prestige it might’ve meant for any previous or future winners.
I'm glad Trump isn't getting it this year

@BridgeOvertroubledWaters
Remember, Trump would actually have to DO something to earn a Nobel Prize.
TexChik · F
@BridgeOvertroubledWaters you really showed him didn't you?

@jshm2 Drawing a nation together, rather than setting groups against one another, is a supreme act of peace.

Good luck in finding her . . the Venezuelan establishment can't!
TexChik · F
The same group that gave the prize to a world leader for his skin color? A DEI prize? Even he didn't know why he got it.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@helenS The reason is given above. You can agree or disagree with their view of whether he merited it. But that is the reason why they awarded him the prize.
helenS · 36-40, F
@SunshineGirl Did they officially say he's awarded the prize because he's black???
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@helenS Of course not, read my post.
helenS · 36-40, F
Somebody is not amused... 😏
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@helenS "Somebody" could probably learn a thing or two from this woman about selfless public service and putting your life on the line for your ideals, if he would shut up and listen for long enough 🕊
TexChik · F
@helenS Socialists don’t like Trump or peace in the world...the negative feedback from conservative world leaders will let you kelly keep the Nobel as a woke DEI prize, much like the Oscars and Emmys.
fortycreek · M
The tantrum should be fun
TexChik · F
@fortycreek if the Nobel people wished to be taken seriously and regain some semblance of credibility… then they clearly dropped the ball here.
fortycreek · M
@TexChik he will get it next year, im sure the entire world will be at peace because of his talents with ending wars, well unless he causes a civil war in the US
TexChik · F
@fortycreek if there is a civil war, it won't be his fault. Libs hate law and order.
Another award made in support of American foreign policy.

Lets give an award to the person who will likely be installed as the American hand picked leader after a regime change war.
@SunshineGirl This is also not the first time the Nobel committee has picked an absolutely insane pick and deliberately misrepresented them as some kind of martyr for peace and democracy like Liu Xiaobo who was a Chinese man who despised all things Chinese and advocated for the eradication of Chinese culture and language and suggested China should be colonized by a western power for 300 years to "fix it".
@SunshineGirl It's great having youtful genes!
@SunshineGirl Also if you go back and look at what actually happened during the 2024 presidential election. The claim that the opposition member Gonzalez won, literally came from the opposition themselves. Claiming they won based on polling stations reporting to them. No third party observers were involved.

And the fact there even is an opposition completely blows up the nonsense of "single party rule." and dictatorship.

Then Anthony Blinken made a pronouncement from Washington that Maduro's victory was not the will of the people. I guess he is psychic.

But no serious person would take the word of either major party in any election as a neutral source on the results of the election.

I sure wish I could have seen Trump throw a tantrum when he lost.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@RosaMarie Do you really want to venture inside the White House bedroom at such an early hour?

@swirlie After she liberates Venezuela, perhaps she can lend America a helping hand.
swirlie · 31-35
@SunshineGirl
The thing is, Venezuela supplies the USA with 20% of America's crude oil supply and Canada supplies the USA with 70% of America's crude oil supply. For Trump to bad-mouth her at this point in the game is giving her good reason to shut off the oil taps to the American consumers after she DOES liberate Venezuela.

That's why Trump is walking on thin ice, not only as far as Venezuelan oil is concerned, but as far as his misogynistic relationship with the very woman who may well be putting herself in Trump's face sooner than later.
