Losing to whom though?

Other countries, or themselves?

It is a very rich country but with extremely large economic, political and social divisions and inequalities we see played out in microcosm in their spats on here.

More to the point, perhaps they fear being no longer Top Dog in the world.

The People's Republic of China has that aim, and is steadily working towards it; helped no end by having lulled "the West" into a sense of false security bolstered by the genuine "Western" wish not to be at continual loggerheads with everyone.

As a single-party state with a stable governmental continuum safe from elections or coups, she has the advantage lacked by the USA and other democracies (small 'd', for you readers over there!); of being able to make cohesive, coherent strategic plans a decade and more ahead. Her Presidents come and go by biology rather than any meaningful votes, and do not make much overall difference. Each so far (only three or four of them) has put his stamp on the details but of still the same system under the same Party. Democracies are subject to the vagaries of elections fought over policies and economics that reflect Party ideology.

China has another quality in her favour. Her leaders are very able administrators despite being out-and-out Party bureaucrats; but above all they have considerable patience. Combined with their system, China can plan far ahead, years of chipping away, undermining Britain, the EU, the USA; supporting tyrants when they suit her, bringing African and South American nations under her influence.

The USA does have equally bright administrators, and thought herself able to do that. She certainly succeeded in many ways for some post-WW2 decades as leader of the NATO Alliance; but she is no longer the international leader she thought she was then. Still very rich and powerful, but facing stiff competition and a lot of nations and cultures that despise Uncle Sam for their own reasons.

.

So if some Americans fear for their country, maybe it's that loss of world power they fear, not her internal squabbles, deep though they be. It might also explain the apparent, strong thread of isolationism in the USA, against international organisations and treaties outside of US-run NATO; sometimes expressed by the vague term "globalists" used to insult anyone wanting strong international links.

MAGA was only an election slogan, but in their hearts even many dreaming of it must have realised some of its means were more idealist than practical: realised that once a country has lost her major industries it is extremely hard or impossible to regain them.
