From the moment I first heard it, this song has always hit me where I live…
I was listening to it recently while my middle sister and I were talking about when we used to visit our grandparents. Sometimes the great-aunts and uncles would be there, too.
They’d talk about all the things they had done and seen during their long lives. The unimaginable things they had seen that had been accepted as a matter of course, and the times people had fought back.
Even while telling us about these terrifying times they would add the caveat,
"This is not saying you should hate anyone. We are not people who hate.
But for your own protection you should stay aware of what is out there and be mindful."
Sis and I were both in tears by the time the song finished, remembering all those family members, now passed, and resolved to continue honoring them. 😔
