It's like Australia Day, or Columbus Day in a sense.
But I would challenge Mr Rock to find a another date that is common for the country to celebrate in lieu of July 4th that does not have historical baggage. Emancipation Day?

@Longpatrol Surprisingly, that’s celebrated more in other parts of the world than here, on August 1.
And here, people generally won’t make a big deal about something that isn’t specific to them.
We found that out about MLK Day.
