I'm an American and I agree with Thomas. I also think that I don't much care (in some ways) what others think. Without us, you'd all be ruled by Nazi Germany or Russia, or China.
So yeah, we have some serious problems. Just be glad you have the rights and privileges you have. Over 600,000 of us have fought and died (almost all of them on your soil) protecting them for you.

@Ontheroad America 'entered the war' in its own defence when its navy was attacked and Germany declared war on it .
In truth these actions were taken not by 'America', 'Japan" or 'Germany' - not by the people, but by the governments and military of these countries. What would have happened without those events is open to imaginative hypothesis but is unknowable.
Note too that the words of a N.Z. journalist are his alone.

@Ontheroad Without the involvement of ANY of the allies - or any of their their enemies; or the allegedly neutral countries, what "would have happened" ?
Guess away; it's meaningless fantasy. What happened, is what happened. Tens of millions of people on all sides suffered and died; the bulk of them civilians and conscripts with no choice in the matter.
No one carries all the guilt or deserves all the praise for what happened in WW2.
