Vinyl's Comeback

As an aside to HypnoChodes Killer LP's question and the great list of albums on there.
How does seeing all the racks with vinyl LP's make you feel when you go into record shops?
It makes me feel happy. It's like how it used to be. I love using my fingers to move them, It's great to see all those long-lost albums returned to how they should be. Some prices are a bit shocking, but the vinyl is thicker. If you want to buy it then you get the long-lost pleasure of physically owning an a record! Something you can take home; pull off the inner sleeve with its annoying static charge and carefully place it on the turntable and enjoy the sleeve art and notes at your leisure

Vinyl prices are largely too high I feel. I still have a large collection from the 70s/80s that I bought back in the day. I sometimes buy from second hand stores and have some occasional new additions, like the last Rick Wakeman release 8 got on vinyl for example.

I'm a lifelong vinyl loyalist.
I have thousands of the things and regularly dig through all the likely spots within a sixty mile radius.
The prices these days make me pretty queasy, but I guess I can laugh about all the times in the 90's when I pulled entire collections out of dumpsters or found beautiful OG pressings for .50 or a buck.

I'm kind of shocked that I spent $18 smackeroos on a 45 last week...but it's a righteous platter and the rest of my order was well under retail and included a few true gems I missed having, shrug.

CD's have been much more fun to take risks on for cheap since records became cool again IMHO.

Vinyl has it's own drawbacks (like inner groove distortion) but the nice thing with physical media -

Nothing to update, you don't get all these suggestions, you do not have to deal with finding ad blockers that still work because there are no ads,

I think the prices are mostly the same as in the 80's when we adjust for inflation.

I had a huge vinyl collection back in the day but I had a real hate for it, still do. Unfortunately it was the only way to hear my favourite music but I hated the dust, static, crackling, hissing sound and no matter how much I tried to take care of it, scratches would appear from nowhere. I got rid of the lot once CDs appeared

I hope people are playing it on something decent! Not only will those briefcase record players that you can get in record shops not sound very good, they also have higher stylus tracking force which isn't kind to your (expensive) vinyl. Best way to go is amp & speakers plus a decent record deck.

Wait till you see what the kids are into next. Casettes are making a comeback.
Ive fixed multiple cassetes and casette players because of this revival.
Check out the price of sony walkmans on ebay....egad.

@Arnoldjrmmer walkman prices seem to be all over the place, whether the cassette works or not.
Of course most of them are going to need a new belt.

I imagine the kids who are interested in cassettes will soon lose interest because even with a good deck, sound quality and reliability are just too unstable.

I have a few cassette decks, most JVC, but when I listen to a tape I think, "Why am I torturing myself with this?"

I had thousands of vinyl LPs and was never so happy as when digital came along and ended the surface noise, skips, crackles, and pops of of vinyl.
Dave1955 · 61-69, M
@ChipmunkErnie Very true! But I like to think those noises as my personal audio history! Like the time I was bit pissed and knocked the turntable by mistake! Why is always a favorite track ?
Love the sound of vinyl, pops, clicks and all.

I don't collect vinyl but I do restore turntables.
