Music is art, art is subjective.

I'm going with Burt Bacharach. Cheesy? Perhaps, but the dude's songs have been recorded by more than 1,000 different artists. He has written 73 US and 52 UK Top 40 hits.

I'd bet you'd be wrong about the airplay difference.

I'm going with Bob Dylan because his writing abilities are head and shoulders above everyone else. There are lots of pretty voices out there; Dylan's "voice like sand and glue *" cuts right to the core of his songs.

I’ll go with Billy Joel
Funlov · M
@Ambroseguy80 but so will country singer, George Strait I don’t think there’s a better country singer out there it’s ever been around besides Merle Haggard
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
@Funlov unlike Billy - I’ve seen George Strait in concert. But I would still give the nod to Billy Joel for his songwriting.

@Ambroseguy80 oh, god, yes for sure

Joni Mitchell
BlueSkyKing · M
Bob Dylan first to mind.
Firegod74 · 46-50, M
I think Lead Belly maybe. Somebofbthe songs he wrote and sung in the 1930s were still being sung by bands such as Nirvana decades later.

I'll nominate Carole King. James Taylor first became known for doing a cover of one of her songs. So did the Shirelles.
