TrashCat · M
I'm going with Burt Bacharach. Cheesy? Perhaps, but the dude's songs have been recorded by more than 1,000 different artists. He has written 73 US and 52 UK Top 40 hits.
Vin53 · M
I'd bet you'd be wrong about the airplay difference.
TrashCat · M
@Vin53 I don't know. There have been literally over 1k artists who recorded his songs. I think it's damn close
Vin53 · M
Ok. I'll buy you a beer if I'm wrong.

Great song writers include Carole King. Great singers include Linda Ronstadt, Sarah Vaugh, actually many others. For group harmony singing I really like the Beach Boys.

@badminton really nice
I'm going with Bob Dylan because his writing abilities are head and shoulders above everyone else. There are lots of pretty voices out there; Dylan's "voice like sand and glue *" cuts right to the core of his songs.

* In the immortal words of David Bowie.
@Vin53 in no particular order

Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
I’ll go with Billy Joel
Funlov · M
@Ambroseguy80 but so will country singer, George Strait I don’t think there’s a better country singer out there it’s ever been around besides Merle Haggard
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
@Funlov unlike Billy - I’ve seen George Strait in concert. But I would still give the nod to Billy Joel for his songwriting.
Funlov · M
@Ambroseguy80 oh, god, yes for sure
Bob Dylan first to mind.
GuiltyBiStander · 31-35, F
Joni Mitchell
Firegod74 · 46-50, M
I think Lead Belly maybe. Somebofbthe songs he wrote and sung in the 1930s were still being sung by bands such as Nirvana decades later.

Writer: Stephen King
Writer of songs: Bob Dylan
Singer of songs: ?
There are so many. Besides those already mentioned, there’s William "Smokey" Robinson.
Funlov · M
@bijouxbroussard let’s not forget George Jones
@Funlov Stevie Wonder.
@bijouxbroussard No doubt you've heard Diana Ross sing "Forever Young"

Music is art, art is subjective.
HollyW · 18-21, F
I'll nominate Carole King. James Taylor first became known for doing a cover of one of her songs. So did the Shirelles.
espoir · 36-40, F
@HollyW oh nice choice. Although I never heard of the Shirelles
HollyW · 18-21, F
@espoir Will you still love me tomorrow was a motown hit
espoir · 36-40, F
@HollyW oh I know that one. Thanks
