Actually, I believe it's simply because there really isn't too many contemporary rock and hard rock bands relevant during this time.
It's all pop, R&B and world music.
Kids these days don't know how to rock.
They never banged their head against the stage like they never did before. They never made it bleed, made it ring, made it really sore.
They never dived into the pit from the stage and let the crowd take them where they will....they never did the "Toxic Waltz", nor the "Wall of Death"
