Definitely a rock guitar solo by Jeff.
Some time ago I had a beautiful discussion with someone about whether Beck was a jazz guitar player or not. We came to the conclusion that whatever Jeff Beck was, he was very important in the lineage of jazz guitar.

R.I.P. Jeff 🌷

@helenS I came to "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" via Bert Jansch & John Renbourn's acoustic version. I was very fortunate indeed to see the composer himself - one Charles Mingus - perform live in Liverpool in about 1971.

@ArtieKat "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" is a Charles Mingus tribute to Lester Young as far as I know. I love Mingus and his modernism (and I think Lester is a bit old-fashioned).

@helenS I didn't know that! I don't think I'm familiar with any Lester Young!

@ArtieKat For you: Lester with Nat "King" Cole:

May you enjoy the music, Sir!

@helenS Thank you, Helen xx. Did you have to wind up the gramophone first? 😁

@ArtieKat My late grand-uncle had one, which ran at 78rpm, and he had lots of shellac disks!

@helenS My paternal grandfather did too. We had an electric one (with needles which had to be replaced quite frequently). My favourite of the old 78s was "The Washington Post March" but the centre got enlarged and it played asymmetrically.... :-(

@ArtieKat Here's Lester with Miles Davis (!), Salle Pleyel, Paris (1956). Inter-generational jazz!

I feel that Davis is very much the star here.
