I wish we got to see Sacha Baron Cohen play Freddie Mercury
Back in 2010, he was set to play him in the first attempt at making a Queen biopic, what would later become Bohemian Rhapsody eight years later. The announcement caught everyone by surprise since Cohen was known for his comedy and mockumentary roles. But this was going to be him playing the legendary singer of Queen in a serious dramatic role. It would've broken his typecast and given him a chance to prove how skilled of an actor he could be. Sadly, plans fell through due to creative differences he had with the three surviving members of Queen. Cohen wanted a gritty R-rated tell all and the band wanted a family-friendly PG retelling of their history (lame af). In the end, the surviving Queen members got their precious largely fictionized version of their story with the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody and we all know how that turned out. Maybe not terrible, but an egregiously watered down and unfaithful telling of the band's history.
I believe what Cohen had in mind would've made for a much better film and again, would've given him a chance to shine in a serious, more mature role. But I suppose that's showbiz for you.
