A little-known classic of gothic metal

I love the production on this: so heavy yet so atmospheric, and Stefanie Duchêne has a fabulous voice.

This is legit, thanks for posting. I like that they're not worried about genre rules or cliches.
I don't come across much spiritual material in heavy music,it's refreshing.
And that guitar stuff at the end cracked me up-F-yeah!

@dubkebab Yeah, I love that coda riff too. The whole album's great: you'll get it on YouTube if you can't get it or play it on CD.

@PunkRockSuperStar I like CD's- they're cheap and I'm old.
Sometimes I even record youtube stuff onto cassette, haha.

Also-thanks for mentioning 'coda riff' I'm a drummer and a bit of a caveman,so next time I'm hanging out with guitar wizard bros I can be all like,"ahh,fellas-dig the intense CODA RIFF !"

@caPnAhab I've finally got around to listening to the tracks you posted. I like them both, though probably the Bizarre Flowers one more than the Atrox one as it's less repetitive and monotonous, at least on first hearing. Both tracks reminded me a bit of early My Dying Bride. I love some of MDB's old stuff. Only ever saw them once as they rarely seem to play in the UK. 'The Crown of Sympathy' is probably my favourite song of theirs, but they did several excellent albums.

@PunkRockSuperStar I just listened to Crown of sympathy. I can hear the resemblance you mentioned. I like the moody stuff... I don't know MDB but that was a good starting point

@caPnAhab My Dying Bride are reckoned to be one of the three originators of gothic metal, along with Anathema and Paradise Lost. There was also another band called Dominion who came a year-or-two before them and were also excellent. Dominion originated the growling male/melodic female vocals thing which was later imitated by Lacuna Coil and various others. I think all of these bands were originally on the same label, Peaceville.

As for Paradise Lost, they were my favourite band for quite a few years. I thought they were a bit like Metallica, but slower, doomier and more melodic.

Incidentally, I love the Dave McKean artwork on Dominion, Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride's albums. Digital art must have been in its infancy when he created them, but he did beautiful and amazing stuff.

I was absolutely enthralled with their cover of Dead Skin Mask
PunkRockSuperStar · 56-60, M
@SarahAndSamantha Ah, thank you for posting that. I was actually going to ask if you could do that for me, but you've beaten me to it! 🙂
PunkRockSuperStar · 56-60, M
@SarahAndSamantha I wasn't familiar with that song, but I see Slayer did the original. I only ever had one Slayer album so I'm not really familiar with them, but I saw them live at one of the big Donington metal festivals quite a few years ago.

@PunkRockSuperStar I commit metalhead blasphemy by saying I think Slayer is highly overrated, but Dead Skin Mask is one of my all time favorite songs from anybody
