“Werewolves of London" (1978) – Warren Zevon [I Like These Song Lyrics]

I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's
Gonna get a big dish of beef chow mein…
These are the opening lines of Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London”. In 2004, BBC2 listeners selected the song as having the Greatest Opening Song Lines. I’m inclined to agree and can’t think of a better choice offhand.
Of course this is a song that’s full of great lines. It’s creative and clever and I consider the lyrics to be a masterpiece of quirky songwriting. If I were a songwriter, it’s the sort of thing I would want to write.
