It was written by Rob Parisi. He was also the lead singer for Wild Cherry who the song was written for and first recorded and released in 1976. Someone posted the original version in this same thread. Prince started out playing a guitar and has played it throughout his career. He has many outstanding songs with his better than human guitar skills. One solo performance along with and played with many greats was My Guitar Gently Weeps in a dedication to George Harrison. You can watch it here. Prince noticeably starts in a little bit past halfway thru the video. The whole performance is simply amazing.
