First in 1958, on the 1st of January, and then exactly one year later. Interestingly enough, one of the inmates in his audience in 1959 was a young man named Merle Haggard.
The reason people get confused is that they assume Johnny must have served time in prison, because of his numerous concerts in various prisons, and because of the songs he performed about prison. Johnny felt a lot of empathy for people who were locked up.
