if you had to pick

Arti Shaw or Benny Goodman and why?
helenS · 36-40, F
As drummer Buddy Rich put it in a TV interview with Goodman in the 1970s, “I played with Artie Shaw but you were the one I wanted to play with. Artie had a great sound, but it was just one sound. You had several different sounds.”
In case you’re wondering, Benny’s reply was honest but typical: “I thought you were too loud and played too much drums. You weren’t a good fit for me.”
@helenS Typical of Goodman Thank you

Benny. I used to want to be just like him.
I played clarinet in school band.
@Dainbramadge I tried but failed

@Coimirceoir When ever he was on TV I would grab my clarinet and jam along with him.
I sucked in school tho. LOL
@Dainbramadge at least you tried I never thought of that

Speaking through a modern lens, I'd probably say Goodman for his commitment to the musician more than the color of the musician. Shaw was also on the same page but didn't have as much impact. And "Sing Sing Sing" is one of my favorites from the era.
@Ynotisay good point thank you

Really tough question. I cant pick. My dad and i have discussed this since i was young. We both agree Benny's tone is darker and more dolce. Artie has a more vibrant tone that pierces through the soul.
I cant pick 😅

Artie was not only a fantastic musician, he was also a great author of fiction and non-fiction.
Goodman! Because it’s Benny.
I grew up with Benny Goodman playing in my childhood home. He'd be the one.
Goodman. I’m a fan of Charlie Christian.
