An appreciation thread for old rap/hip hop. I'll start it out

There are earlier artists, but I find this group embodies a certain kind of holistic approach in their rap, like bring up the gospel, respect it but say, hey I want to learn more...

All entries are welcomed, it's a moving target, so it doesn't really have a time period in mind.

Does shout bring change?

Biggie Small speaks to similar oppression in his 'Juicy" classic.
As well as some of Tu Pac's material

@SethGreene531 Thank you... now I go off to listen ❤️
@SW-User My pleasure..."Peace be da journey, bredren." 🧡

@SethGreene531 I started with Grandmaster Flesh for I didn't know it immediately. I'm very fond of Arrested Development, and from the same album of what I posted, so I skipped past... I'll listen to Marky Mark after

@SethGreene531 I may contribute more of my own... we'll see how this goes.

@SethGreene531 I prefer your version, but here's Tone Loc covering "wild thing"

@SW-User Grandmaster sates the appetite of those reaching all the way back, to when rap was. Like an old friend, familiar and relatable; making you long for streets of brownstone you once called home.

Marky Mark's is a lot like POD's Youth of the Nation.

@SW-User Looking forward 👍
SW-User
@SethGreene531 I think this belongs in hip hop history, though I expect he's mostly considered soul/funk

@SW-User Though the titles are subtly different--Wild Thing vs. Wild Side, I loved this one. Anthem of its age. Tone Loc had respect.

This comes to mind with it also

@SethGreene531 Trying to bust a move myself ;)

The songs are rooted together. I'm not going back to see if it's where it's mistitled, or it was considered, artistic borrowing.

Now some earlish white hip hop.... I had a funny circumstance happen once with this one, not saying how.

@SW-User Love this, very smooth.

The 70's influence is heavy here, but HIP-hop is more a culture, with Rap at its core. Specific dress, graffiti, and dance components.
SW-User
@SethGreene531 This one will be more controversial, and certainly questions boundaries in genres... so some old school BodyCount, Ice-T, definitely combines some thrash metal and not so smooth.

@SW-User Beastie Boys are a staple. Ran the scene alongside Rick Rubin and RUN DMC as rap-rock and breakdancing hit.

LOL if I threw down a pizza box and busted a move I'd break something!

@SethGreene531 I'll check out Leftfield as I haven't heard, thanks!
SW-User
@SethGreene531 A little more modern, but becoming outdated if you know K-OS.. but I think changes up the music some here.

SW-User
@SethGreene531 Leftfield definitely combines some elctro/dub style in song. Nice choice.

Here's another one, slightly older than k-os, but now a throwback in time. I should edit I got the chance to see both of these separately.

@SW-User K-OS is a cool kat. Modern , with an age old sound.
I hear elements of this one in yours [media=https://youtu.be/pRfnV_KC_WY]

@SethGreene531 I love k-os... now being somewhat local to him, close to his hometown, I was given the unfortunate circumstance of seeing him live entirely black out drunk. It was sad as he flailed over himself in front of children. And I do love him, he has an old school art about himself that speaks from the heart.
SW-User
@SethGreene531 Now for some women in hip hop, the classic Lauryn Hill,

@SW-User Only known Mos Def as an actor but I'm positive his work is dope. I like their flow here, reminds me of a Wu-Tang song.

Another goodie

@SethGreene531 Going back I think slighty further.... here's some Cypress Hill,

@SW-User 😄 I'd forgotten them --great beats. "Insane in the membrane". Out around House of Pain's 'Jump'

@SethGreene531 Is this hip-hop, in music it's definitely rooted in it, but that's how soul/funk influenced hip hop:
