"Only You (And You Alone)" – The Platters

[media=https://youtu.be/rAUJSc6unAg]
Video of The Platters performing “Only You (And You Alone)” in the 1956 film, Rock Around the Clock.

This doo-wop tune was the first hit song for the acclaimed vocal group, reaching #1 on the U.S. R&B chart and #5 on the U.S. pop chart after its release in 1955.

“Only You (And You Alone)” was composed by producer/songwriter/arranger Buck Ram, who also played the piano on The Platters’ recording. The song has proved to be an enduring classic and has been covered by many performers over the years.

@oldundieslover The Platters cover of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is incredibly beautiful. It might be my favorite by them.

One of the most refined (and popular) of the 'R'n'B vocal' groups, affectionately known as 'doo-woppers'. This was one of those groups with an 'afterlife'...or as far as I can make out, several 'afterlives' in the form of different groups with some claim or another to the name. So it was that when the 'Magic Platters' came to the suburb of Paris where I was living in the late 1980s I went to see them. As I remember the critics weren't overly impressed but I still enjoyed the gig 🎤🙂.

@supersnipe The critics can go hang. Glad you enjoyed the performance.

@Rutterman 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' was picked up a number of times over the years by French singers, in the wake of its first appearance in the Thirties (Tino Rossi, Jean Sablon/Django Reihardt...), and later on, in the wake of the Platters hit. This version by François Deguelt dates from 1958. The song works well in French.

Such a great song. They were SO tight. Didn't know it was a featured in a film. Very cool.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Ynotisay A great song indeed. Yes, and The Platters also performed "The Great Pretender" in the film.

@Rutterman Both of those songs also turned up in 'American Graffiti'. 🎩 to George Lucas for picking them!

@Ghostinthemachine You're welcome. I appreciate your comments.
@Rutterman On our family road trip across the US in 1986, we stopped in a record shop in Chicago, and bought a cassette of the Platters greatest hits.
We wore that tape right out by the time we got to the west coast 😊
There was a half decade where The Platters just dominated the charts and could do no wrong. It is one of a handful of doo wop groups of which I know the names of all the members, including of course Tony Williams as lead.

@LamontCranston That's impressive, knowing the names of all the original members. I doubt if most people today know any of their names.
@Rutterman 😁
