When you grow up in the great State of Texas you’re raised on some amazing musicians. Doug Sahm is one of the diamonds in the rough. From 1975 Austin City Limits. Most will know this song from the recording by Charlie Pride. Doug was one of the originals in the movement Willie Nelson started merging hippies and cowboys into the unique Texas country music scene that inspired millions of young musicians.

@Heartlander @Noreaster
As a young man I was introduced to Doug, Augie, Flacco and Freddy. They inspired so many across generations and genres.

@JesseInTX :) As one who has a bit of history in South Texas and sat on a few old bar stools in Nuevo Laredo, I can really relate.
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
@Heartlander then you’ll relate to this!

@JesseInTX Was he a transplant from California? And ... did Mendocino got re-purposed for Nuevo Laredo?

My history there pre-dates Sahm by a couple of years. But still a frequent visitor and family there til this day.
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
@Heartlander Doug is originally from Houston and moved to San Marcos at an early age. That’s where he met Roy Head and then the move to Austin.

@Heartlander here’s Nuevo Laredo from 1975

@JesseInTX Got it!

Medocino is in California, so Texas to San Francisco and back to Texas? The border area was sill its own world in the 60s and early 70s. But lively with weekenders from San Antonio, etc. heading to Nuevo Laredo. His Nuevo Laredo was a time marker for that era. "Boys Town" was/is the red light district. With tequila at $1 a liter and rum at $2 it had all the ingredients for wild weekends. But also great restaurants, nightclubs and shopping.

@JesseInTX I bought a place that on viewing, to go as is, had vinyl albums and a guitar against the wall. I knew this was the place for me. And one of the albums was an early Freddy Fender

@atlantic59 he's really reminding me of the Vaughn brothers, and I'm just on a learning path
