Rolling Stone Magazine queried a bunch of rock musicians and ranked the 500 greatest albums of all time. And coming in at #2: The Beach Boys, 'Pet Sounds' (1966), featuring Sloop John B.
RSM actually compiled the list twice; the first time, #1 was The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper, and the second time, #1 was What's Going On by Marvin Gaye. However, in BOTH lists, Pet Sounds was ranked the second best album of all time.
Wilson, a notorious perfectionist, would spend months working on individual songs. Second single, ‘Sloop John B,’ for example, was started in July 1965. Wilson would then set it aside for a few months, before revisiting it in October. He spent the last 3 months of 1965 polishing the vocals.
. . .
The Beatles were inspired by ‘Pet Sounds’ to make ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.’ In fact, McCartney cited ‘God Only Knows’ as the greatest song of all time. ‘Pet Sounds’ changed the way people thought about albums. They were no longer a compilation of unrelated singles, they had now become an art piece.

I've heard a lot worse. At least they are tuneful and happy-sounding.

LOVE the Beach Boys. Brian and Carl wilson's voices... especially Carl on "God Only Knows." Makes me weep!!

That is a nice song. But God Only Knows, is one of the best songs ever written....listen to the lyrics....nice harmony as well.
I may not always love you
But as long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
I'll make you so sure about it
