Gene Chandler - Duke Of Earl

[media=https://youtu.be/h6Uht69h8Is]

Released 1961. "Duke of Earl" sold one million copies in a little over a month, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA. After the song spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard charts, Chandler purchased a cape, monocle, cane and top hat and advertised himself as the Duke of Earl.

Great record! Did not appear on UK charts, not sure if it was even released here, but it turns up on compilations as do many US hits. I didn't know about the aristocratic dress 😀 that's a fun touch.

Gene Chandler had some (mostly minor) hits here, the biggest being 'Get Down', No. 11 in...1979

I was 11, very sick from tonsillitis and an ear infection that would leave me deaf in my left ear for the rest of my life. Every night I listened to the top 10 from KXOK in St. Louis. "Duke of Earl" was my favorite song. I watched it climb the chart but then one night it wasn't there, not at 10 or 9 or 8 or 7.... Gone forever, like most hits back then. But then there it was--#1! "Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl!" Still one of the happiest moments of my life!
My first yr of high school - I remember it as being (perhaps) one of the last old-style doo-wop songs.
