Anytime I hear that song, I think of the 1986 World Series. The Mets were still celebrating on the field after winning game 7, and the Red Sox were still in the dugout in absolute misery when NBC decided to play the song while doing a slow pan of Boston’s dugout. They were showing Wade Boggs crying as James Ingram goes “I did my best…but I guess my best wasn’t good enough.” My friends and I just laughed our asses off at NBC’s savagery in that moment. I’ve associated it with that song ever since.
