Why do musicians stop making music?

Countless examples of amazing artists, writing song after song, and then one day, they just stop, and you never hear from them again.
Do they just get burned out? Bored? Can't do it anymore?

A few return to play the old music, but they just don't seem to write new stuff. What's the deal with that?

Wait a minute... what style of music?

Most of the thread seems to concentrate just on pop and rock, a notoriously fickle field.

The best musicians in other genres, both composers and performers-only, have careers that end only when age or illness diminishes their abilities.
