Bowie was living in West Berlin at the time of the album recording. The title track, Hereos, distinct sound was the work of producer Brian Eno and guitarist Robert Fripp.
The song is about a struggling young couple living in East Germany, on the other side of The Wall. Bowie also sang the track in German and French languages.
