The Archies - Sugar Sugar

[media=https://youtu.be/4wUlBhnxOX4]

In the autumn of 1969 this single topped both Billboard's Hot 100 (for four weeks) and the UK Singles Chart (for eight weeks), ranking number one for the year in both America and Britain. “Sugar, Sugar” is the most successful bubblegum pop single of all time.

Hey, the first pop record I ever bought! 😀 Six million or so teens and pre-teens around the world bought this one, and it's not difficult to see why. It's a well-put-together record, with infectious hooks and the musicians sound as if they were having a ball recording it. I used to play this over and over again!

The original visuals to this, as featured on 'Top Of The Pops' , were of a cartoon band. This was because 'The Archies' weren't a band in the conventional sense. They were session musicians assembled by record producer Don Kirshner as a kind of follow-up to the Monkees, but without the disputes over creative control, etc. I might have seen photographs of the musicians once or twice in the decades since this appeared, but at the time, they were anonymous.

Thank you for posting my first-ever pop music purchase! It was on the orange RCA label and cost eight shillings and six pence (42.5p)
I believe it was offered to The Monkees first, but they turned it down because they were trying to shed the pop image and reboot themselves.

Used to watch "The Archies" cartoon series on the Satellite from a retro station when I was a kid. They played all of the Archies music.
I got a copy on the back of my Sugerpops cereal, an actual 45, and I played it.

I've heard it before. It's OK for kids' music.

@HairbrushDiva it's not. Just gay

@Slade Don't troll me. What else does "gay" mean apart from homosexual?

I love the Archies. They were technically the first virtual band.
