“Peaceful Easy Feeling” is said to be one of the Eagles most enduringly popular songs, yet it was only a middling hit for the band after its release in Dec. 1972, peaking at #22 on the US singles chart and #20 on the Easy Listening chart. Despite its distinct country flavor, the song didn’t make it onto the Country chart.
Singer-songwriter Jack Tempchin wrote the song in stages and in several different locations in the San Diego area. He finished working on it while waiting for his order at Der Wienerschnitzel, a fast food restaurant specializing in hot dogs.
On Dec.1, 2012, the city of San Diego observed the 40th anniversary of the song’s release, declaring it “Peaceful Easy Feeling Day”, and held a celebration at the aforementioned restaurant. The table where Tempchin finished his song was marked with a plaque and the songwriter was presented with a golden wiener.
Tempchin was quite proud of the award: “Lots of people have Grammys,” he said. “But they don’t have a solid gold wiener.”
