The Old MTV

Who misses the old MTV when it was actually about music? I remember rushing home from school to watch TRL everyday
Subaru · 46-50, M
I liked Head Bangers Ball😃
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Subaru 🤘
Byron8by7 · M
I was a regular viewer of "Headbanger's Ball" when it was hosted by Riki Rachtman from 1990 until it was cancelled in 1995. I really missed it. Still do.
Notanymore · 36-40, M
Headbangers ball was the best thing on TV ever
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
i remember in '84 and my family just got cable and there was MTV. i loved the videos. i don't know what happened to that. they need to have a channel just for music videos like MTV used to be.
AlyssaG · 36-40, T
@DIABLISS it’s crazy how video just seemed to die suddenly.
@AlyssaG yeah, it is like people only want to see unprofessional home made videos now
modern ways of transmitting content lack the element of belonging to a social group of people in the form of direct social interaction with that group. today, this communication is mediated by remote communication through electronic gadgets, which filter out the "live" element of emotional communication.

In other words, the people with whom you communicate directly in real life without using gadgets are in most cases not familiar with the content that you like. this means that you cannot discuss this content with them and experience common emotions. the modern way of delivering content deprives you of this possibility.
@fakable i hate to say it but you are right
My family never had it (we still had a black and white TV) but I always enjoyed seeing it at friends’ houses.
Jessmari · 41-45
It was good up until the late 90's. After that it was VH1 if you wanted actual music videos.

Although VH1 was somewhat watered down, it was better than listening to MTV obsess over Spring Break all year long.
Byron8by7 · M
@Jessmari Yes, didn't spring break last about three months back then ? (Haha)
Jessmari · 41-45
@Byron8by7 It felt like it for sure
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
I used to watch MTV and VH1 back when they had pretty good music videos in the 80s and 90s. I also watched Beavis & Butt Head, as well as Daria. Now both channels are filled with reality tv trash.
Byron8by7 · M
@Barefooter25 The "VJs" knew what they were talking about, like they actually cared.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
@Byron8by7 I even remember Celebrity Death Match. I loved watching that show. 😅
Byron8by7 · M
@Barefooter25 I especially remember Howard Stern and Oprah Winfrey, haha. By the way, Stern and Winfrey are the same age, both born in January 1954.
CestManan · 46-50, F
Yeah I was awesome back then but then at some point they decided they wanted to appeal to the urban crowd so to speak and it just got worse from there.
Byron8by7 · M
@CestManan Exactly.
Darin99branch · 51-55, M
Yes. Give me the music!
Subaru · 46-50, M
Wol62 · 51-55, M
I do! I gave up watching it years ago.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
Shit went downhill after around 2006. I loved watching Cribz and Pimp my Ride as a kid. Then it turned into the Rob Dyrdek network indefinitely 😑
@Rolexeo those were the days
Elegy · 46-50
Yea but moving on, there is YouTube. ;)
Elegy · 46-50
@DIABLISS I said it was different but yes some people like to tune in and listen, I understand.
Byron8by7 · M
@DIABLISS I totally agree.
@Elegy i like their collection of romantic classical. it sends me

🤔........I remember the first year it appeared on TV.........The channel would sign off at the end of the day like all channels would. They only played music video's.......................and then................
icedsky · 51-55, M
They had a series called MTVs Fear. Was a crazy show about haunted locations.
SW-User
I had the Canadian version MuchMusic :(
I do. I loved it.
SW-User
I do !!!
Before that and before it was known as HBO, I believe it was called channel 100
They would show music videos between broadcasted movies
That’s when I first saw The Trees by Rush
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Ah yes Total Request Live and Carson Daly.

I can beat that. I used to watch "Headbanger's Ball" and "120 minutes" on MTV, probably before your time...way back in....the 80's!
SW-User
I miss the old earth when a penis made you a man and a vagina made you a woman and that was generally accepted
Elegy · 46-50
@SW-User it still is, it is just a little more than that. It evolves as most meanings do.
SW-User
@Elegy nope
Elegy · 46-50

ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Back when it started I enjoyed it because it was a way to keep up with the latest rock music. They they dropped rock, and then music.
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
Oh yeah there was once a time even before that, rumor has it. I miss those days
@TheLordOfHell you weren't even alive then...i remember.
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
@DIABLISS I'm older than Mtv thabkyouverymuch.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
The true "old MTV" didn't have TRl, not even Remote Control. Ha.
AlyssaG · 36-40, T
@uncalled4 I think you know what I meant!

It’s not Music TV anymore
