@Ian123 I think most people liked Michael Jackson before he went weird.

Since I never met them I can't comment on them as people, but I certainly never liked their music, not even in my teens / early-20 when one was supposedly meant to like it!

Same with the products of The Jackson Five's rival manufactured child un-prodigy troupe, The Osmonds; and despite their generally more intelligent songs, the so-over-rated singing styles of Bob Dylan and Elton John. Now there's heresy, admitting that!

@ArishMell It's not heresy to state your opinions of singers no matter how fervent a following they have.

@HairbrushDiva I know!

I was actually taking a pop at the glossy-magazine fashion for investing in certain performers an over-weening importance and "talent" linked only to stage presence and publicity ratings, not to any real ability or artistic significance. Indeed, technical skill and other qualities seem almost cardinal sins.

This is an example of The Great Family We-All, which assumes that because its own circle (and others) like something or someone, then "we all" do so.

It's not new of course. Frank Sinatra was a Michael Jackson or Elton John of his day - famous for fame itself and selling undoubtedly very popular songs, but little else. (Sinatra seemed to speak the words - he met the pitch and rhythm but without the singing timbre some of his contemporaries, like Tony Bennett, displayed, in songs I don't think any of them wrote.)

It works the other way round of course. The We-Alls also try to dictate whom "we-all" dislike - missing that many of the victims are consistently more talented and successful than those accepted. Or maybe they don't miss that point, but cannot risk opprobrium and banishment by admitting to tastes Not Approved.

++++

There were a sad start and end to the Jackson Five / Jacksons, of course, and though I never liked any of their music I would not wish either on anyone. Driven into their show-business careers by a father reputed to have been cruel, manipulative and ruthless, we all know Michael basically became unhinged, but I don't know much about the rest. I think his sister found modest success as a solo pop-singer. Another though, is said to have become a filling-station assistant: if so, why? A humdrum job chosen for sanity after retiring from the rat-race, or having spent all the money he should have earned as a performer with nothing to suit any other career? I don't know if their music is still played, either original recordings or cover versions. If not, the royalties won't be coming in.
