@wildbill83 I missed out on the 8-track thing. I can remember when they were commonly used in car audio (about 1974), and the players were cheaper than the compact cassette variety. The problem was they used tape cartridges that weren't used for much else. I have only ever seen a couple of home cartridge players. And I've never seen an 8-track recorder, or blank tapes.

Not a record player, but decks. One for 33/45, and one rescued from a dead stereo mounted in a new plinth and fitted with a specific cartridge for playing 78's. It's been kind of re-purposed.
Our local consumers' association doesn't like the new all-in-one record players with those little red ceramic cartridges. They usually sound pretty poor.
