What do you think of tribute bands?

What is your opinion on tribute bands? Or in other words, a band that only covers one other bands music?
I see lots of ads for tribute bands that only cover The Beatles, The Eagles or The Grateful Dead.
It seems harmless, but is it in good taste? I mean would you feel comfortable going to see a Nirvana or Blind Melon tribute band?
Part of me feels like it’s all in good fun and a salute to those who originally performed the music. Let people have their fun. But the other part of me is irked by it. Like It’s disrespectful and kind of pathetic. I know music is meaningful in different ways for everyone so I am curious about others opinions on this subject.

Some do it very well, others do not. Some of them capture the spirit of the originals, and others make a mockery of it. There are even some who make big improvements over the original and in a good way even making it sound better. I see nothing wrong with it when they do a good job, but I guess I'm a bit set in my ways and believe the originals should jus be left alone. I feel a lot the same way about this tend of doing movie remakes and reboots.

@indyjoe That is very much how I feel about it. I voted you best answer because you mentioned the comparison with movie re-makes. I could talk for hours about that. Lol.

@CanarysCry a lot of original movies may be a little dated, but if they were good they withstand the test of time. If they are so set on doing remakes then they should choose ones that were not that good but may have had potential and do those and leave the classics alone.

@indyjoe Exactly. John Carpenters remake of the Thing is one of my all time favorites. The original was a great story, but it was in need of an artist like Carpenter to really express its full potential.

I've never paid much attention to them, or been to see any live. But I've heard good things about some of the Pink Floyd and Genesis ones. I don't see the harm.

I view them as an homage.

I play in several of these. Ask me anything. I have played in Beatles, Stones, and Bowie tribute bands.
CanarysCry · 46-50, F
Oh wow!! I think I would actually go see something like that! Kind of like seeing a live action “Rocky Horror Picture Show”.
I think I get it now...lol

@CanarysCry We just played to a crowd of 600 last week. We do our best to sound authentic. The same with the Beatles band, except that we do not dress up.

So do you feel any awkwardness portraying this iconic band? I mean The Beatles? Do you you play for money or because love for the band? Maybe for maybe both? Just curious.
