Does anyone know what inspired Rachmaninov to write his 2nd symphony?

The story is that he wrote it after recovering from a deep depression and even dedicated it to his doctor. It is quite lovely. The Adagio sostenuto is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, imo. 😊
