Why do people do this

So I came out of my office to get some water and my worker asked me how things were going.

I said things were fine but it was freezing in MY office.

He says what are you talking about it's not cold in here you must be crazy.

I said well it's cold in my office.

And he says I highly doubt that. It's definitely not cold in there.

I mean why say that. Yes it is cold to me, in fact I turned on my little office heater to warm myself up.

Do people just want to argue just to argue?

Oh, yes...unfortunately, some do that and it's rude. It's this strange need they have to say something contrary to what you have just stated. While we can have differing opinions, I think when someone expresses something that to them is a fact ( such as what you said), I think it's just common courtesy not to contradict the person. He made it worse too by calling you crazy, which is crossing the line and offensive. Just chalk it up to ignorance and lack of knowledge of social norms and behavior, which is not an excuse because at his age, he should know them by now...but some are just rude and tactless.

@LilMissAnonyMOUSE this is very true. Just like if he would of told me he was hot, I wouldn't argue with him. I probably would have even offered him to come spend a few minutes in my office because it was freezing in there LOL. But I definitely wouldn't say what are you talking about are you crazy it's freezing.
@Cigarguy Exactly. What he did is what's called gaslighting, defined as ''Manipulate (someone) using psychological methods into questioning their own sanity or powers of reasoning''. As if only his opinion was right and questions yours as if you don't have a clue or able to decide for yourself. Every time he asks you anything not job-related, just say '' Sorry, can't right now, I'm busy''...hopefully he'll eventually get the hint.

Thank you for giving me Best Comment☺

@LilMissAnonyMOUSE yes and Kim saying I'm crazy was a bit hurtful because I do struggle with mental health issues and everyone at my office knows this.

No problem thank you for the very kind answer!
