Star Trek same sex relationships,

Star Trek didn`t really cover same sex relationships very much, but I remember this episode sending a powerful message back in the day.

About
A Trill scientist (Susanna Thompson), whose host once was married to Dax's previous host, arrives on Deep Space Nine; the former lovers must decide if they want to resume their relationship and defy the laws of Trill society.

I think at the heart of the episode it really wasn't about being in a same sex relationship. The previous host was a male. As far as same sex couples go star trek had painted themselves as beyond these social issues. Those issues are essentially no longer a talking point and is simply accepted as thing that just is. If they actually put it as a focus in an episode it would be seen as forced and out of place.

In the new star trek movie you briefly see Sulu arm and arm with his boyfriend at the end. It was obviously a nod to the actor rather than the character. Then again, Sulu's personal life wasn't mentioned much at all in the original series and could be gay for all we know.
