Nichelle Nichols 1932-2022, R.I.P.

Groundbreaking actress as Lt. Nyota Uhura on the original Star Trek.
On Star Trek, Nichols was one of the first black women featured in a major television series. Her prominent supporting role as a bridge officer was unprecedented. During the first year of the series, Nichols was tempted to leave the series, because she wanted to pursue a Broadway career; however, a conversation with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed her mind. She said that King personally encouraged her to stay on the series, telling her that he was a big fan of Star Trek. He said she "could not give up" because she was playing a vital role model for black children and young women across the country, as well as for other children who would see black people appearing as equals, going so far as to favorably compare her work on the series to the marches of the ongoing Civil Rights movement.
I had no idea that Martin Luther King Jr. had that impact on her in her decision to be a continued part of Star Trek!
@Pfuzylogic Yes ! It blew me away that MLK watched (and reportedly enjoyed) Star Trek.

Didn’t she have an episode (with a controversial at the time) where she and William Shatner had a romance?
@Pfuzylogic Yes, the "kiss". But I seem to recall they were being manipulated for the amusement of some extraterrestrials on a planet where they’d landed.

@bijouxbroussard
That does sound familiar.
At the time that was a first!
@Pfuzylogic During that episode, Sulu kissed her on the neck, as well. It’s been called "the first interracial kiss on tv", but that’s inaccurate. There had been a few white/Asian kisses on tv since the 50’s, also receiving public disapproval.

Back in the 60s, any interracial romance
was a risk to career and public approval.
I am glad they had the wherewithal to carry on and break new ground to what we found accepted and normal in society!

@bijouxbroussard They were also intimate with each other in private life.

@bijouxbroussard Nichelle Nichols and William Shatner. On at least one occasion anyhow.
Nichelle wrote a book and mentioned something about it. But before it was published, Shatner said something publicly about it, and she was pissed.
@DallasCowboysFan I don’t think so. She said she had an affair with Gene Roddenberry.

@bijouxbroussard Thanks I always thought it was Shatner.
