He was supposed to be Grey. But because they had issues with colours during the print runs he became green. Later on there were some issues where he was grey, and grey hulk ussually portrays more inteligence while green hulk is just really angry. But yeah... in most issues, he's really green.

@Kwek00 In the original comic appearance he was gray (I remember buying it when it first came out), the color was changed for his second appearance. I think he was supposed to be green from the start, but there was a mix-up with the colorist. Or Stan Lee just changed his mind?

@Kwek00 Also, I think in the original Marvel comics he was green

Except for his first appearance. He was gray in that, green ever afterward.

According to wiki:
In the debut, Lee chose grey for the Hulk because he wanted a color that did not suggest any particular ethnic group. Colorist Stan Goldberg, however, had problems with the grey coloring, resulting in different shades of grey, and even green, in the issue. After seeing the first published issue, Lee chose to change the skin color to green. Green was used in retellings of the origin, with even reprints of the original story being recolored for the next two decades, until The Incredible Hulk vol. 2, #302 (December 1984) reintroduced the grey Hulk in flashbacks set close to the origin story. An exception is the early trade paperback, Origins of Marvel Comics, from 1974, which explains the difficulties in keeping the grey color consistent in a Stan Lee written prologue, and reprints the origin story keeping the grey coloration. Since December 1984, reprints of the first issue have displayed the original grey coloring, with the fictional canon specifying that the Hulk's skin had initially been grey.
@Kwek00 wow, never knew. Yep the green seems to bring out the anger emotion to a more believable emotion. Thanks for the info

@usher Green wasn't supposed to be... but later on, in other storylines. You have Banner that can change to Green or Grey Hulk. When he's grey, the hulk is ussually a bit smarter. He's even fully dressed at times.

@Kwek00 I remember buying all of those early Hulks as a kid -- and all the other Marvel zines of the time. Sadly, I sold them all off when i went to college.
