The series was written in short chapters that each focused on a different character. Martin has admitted that he has a lot of the next book written, but needs to write more to tie everything together. Part of the problem is that he's now competing with the HBO series, which has to be intimidating. I'm afraid he's going to leave a bunch of manuscripts for his literary executor who will have the task of completing them, kind of like what Christopher Tolkien had to do with his father's unfinished work.
