@Soitgoes i think its an ego thing : they need to know they are still desirable in a dying relationship. So they seek outside of it for confirmation.
The thing is....they do it from the comfort of having a real life sitting back in reserve.

Which is ultimately cruel.
In short: they want their cake amd they want to eat it too.
