The Five People You Meet in Heaven
A wonderful and touching film. It tells the story of Eddie. Eddie is an old man who has spent his entire life working at an amusement park on Ruby Pier. He’s a kind old man who asks to simply be called a worker. He is very kind to children and gives them handmade gifts. One day, Eddie notices that a high-rise ride begins to break and fall apart. He sees a little girl standing under a platform that is about to collapse. Eddie rushes to save the girl, running under the falling platform, and then he wakes up in an empty amusement park.
Five encounters with five people. All of these people are connected to his life in some way.
The first man has blue skin and performed in the freak show at Ruby Pier. He loved driving cars, and young Eddie, while playing in the street, ran out in front of his car. The blue man lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an obstacle. He got out of the car and died because of his weak heart. Afterward, Eddie finds himself on a battlefield, where he meets his commanding officer from when he served in the army. The third encounter is with Eddie’s father, with whom he had a strained relationship. Here, Eddie forgives his father for all the grievances. The fourth encounter is with Eddie’s wife, whom he loved all his life. He wants to stay with her forever, but Eddie finds himself at the fifth meeting in the paradise of a little Filipino girl. This is the key moment of his redemption. There is a river, picturesque forests, and children who easily wash the little girl in the river. This is the same girl Eddie once killed when he burned down an entire village while escaping captivity. Eddie had used a flamethrower to torch empty wooden huts and houses. In one of them, this little girl had hidden. Eddie thought he saw a small shadow in the burning house and wanted to go inside to save someone. However, he was shot in the leg to save his life. Eddie was haunted throughout his life by memories of the shadow in the house. The girl told Eddie, "You burned me," and asked him to wash her. Eddie washed the burns from the girl's face. Then the little girl said, "You did so much good for the children, and I was happy. I was the one who brought you to safety." The final scene is Eddie meeting all the people he was close to and those he had helped in some way. The film's idea is that every life matters, and all people are connected in some way. The film highlights values like humility, kindness, love, and forgiveness. Eddie thought he had lived a meaningless life working at the amusement park, but he had saved many lives by repairing the rides.
