Do you think The Zodiac Killer was a cop who had a military background

I often wonder about the Zodiac killer. I sometimes think he was schizophrenic and therefore saw his victims as something other than human. I mean, I know it is said that most if not all serial killers see their victims as objects. But I'm talking about delusions of grandiosity. What if his murders were not targeted but random? There is a possibility that his code and method of killing was not due to a high level of organization but rather a high level of delusions. That would make him hard to catch also.
