to all StarWars fans and film theorists...why is Jar Jar Binks Hated so much?

DistilledSpirit · 41-45, M
People didn't like the prequels, and it's easier to blame a character than it is to dissect the movie for what it was. He was an easy thing to point to. Instead of talking about the uninspired plot, poor pacing, odd casting and mediocre writing, they chose to vilify poor, earnest Jar Jar.

And holy hell did they vilify him.

They called him out as a goofy, comic-relief character, ignoring their own cognitive dissonance that the "serious" movies they were comparing it to included silly, kid-friendly characters like C3PO and Yoda. He wasn't like C3PO, though, because he was new, and aimed at the younger viewers. Adult fans of the original series didn't like that. People don't like when things they love show any signs of being targeted at a different audience.

They called him out because he was entirely computer generated. There was (and is) a backlash against computer animation over practical effects which exists primarily because "the movies we loved as kids did it that way." Objectively, though, Jar Jar's animation was very well done, and is far beyond most of the other effects and props in the movie. He was one of the few CG elements that didn't look like it had received nine fresh coats of wax.

Then they called out every single thing he did because it became cool to hate Jar Jar.

In short, he wasn't all that hated, his movies were. He was just new and the easiest thing to rally behind - a symbol of all the things we all hated about the prequel movies.

Oh, and he was a racist stereotype. That part was just plain bad.

@Benjr134: well that's unexpected...so he's the whole cause of the Jedi's downfall?
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Benjr134: Scarily that theory makes so much sense! lol

Because he was too cool. People simply weren't ready for him. He changed the film industry. He is a pioneer. All bow down to the mighty Mr. Binks.

people are dead inside

Have you ever watched the prequels?? 😯

@quinnVneck: Well, that's part of the answer there... There was no real reason for him to be in the film. He was just an annoyance distracting from the meat of the story.

Well, the meat that was there anyway... I personally felt that the prequels were all truly terrible in comparison to the original trilogy.

i still liked Yoda fights with Count Dooku

@quinnVneck: Admittedly there were some decent action scenes :)

He's a racially insensitive stereotype. I believe that's why.
